Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
The presence of an obsession, compulsions or both.

They are time consuming and/or cause distress and/or impairment in social or occuapational functioning.

  • Obsession:
    • Recurrent, persistent and intrusive thoughts, urges or images that are unwanted and cause anxiety and distress
    • Attempt are made to suppress or ignore the thoughts, urges or images or to counteract them with another action
  • Compulsion:
    • Repetitive behaviors (checking, hand-washing) or mental acts (counting, repeating words) the person feels compelled to do because of an obsession or because of their need to apply rules in a strict manner.
    • The behaviors or mental acts are completed to reduce or avoid anxiety or to prevent and undesired event.
